What Is IF (2024) About?
From writer and director John Krasinski, IF is about a young girl named Bea, who has been going through a troubling experience in her life, unexpectedly gains the ability to see people’s imaginary friends (referred to as “IFs” for short) who have been abandoned by the kids they helped. Bea then discovers that her neighbor, Cal, has the same ability. Together they join forces to reunite the IFs with their former kids.
The ensemble cast of IF, directed by Krasinski and starring Ryan Reynolds, includes the filmmakers’ real-life friends. Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and the late Louis Gossett Jr. play human characters, alongside Fiona Shaw and Alan Kim. The film also features the voices of Emily Blunt, Blake Lively, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Maya Rudolph, Bradley Cooper, and many more, representing various kinds of IFs.
“I realized I needed to make a movie for my kids. Since films like ‘Quiet Place’ are too mature for them, I decided to create something more suitable,” Krasinski told EW. “I was fascinated by the immersive world my kids created independently. They escaped into their imaginations, engrossed in games, painting, and art. It was like they had found this secret sanctuary that I longed to visit.”
